A subjective evaluation of noise-shaping quantization for adaptive intra-/interframe DPCM coding of color television signals

چکیده
Nonuniform quantizers for just not visible reconstruction errors in an adaptive intra-/interframe DPCM scheme for componentcoded color television signals are presented, both for conventional DPCM and for noise-shaping DPCM. Noise feedback filters that minimize the visibility of reconstruction errors by spectral shaping are designed for Y, R-Y, and B-Y. A closed-form description of the “masking function” is derived which leads to the one-parameter “ 6 quantizer” characteristic. Subjective tests that were carried out to determine visibility thresholds for reconstruction errors for conventional DPCM and for noise shaping DPCM show significant gains by noise shaping. For a transmission rate of around 30 Mbitsls, reconstruction errors are almost always below the visibility threshold if variable length encoding of the prediction error is combined with noise shaping within a 3:l:l system.

متن کاملSpectral noise shaping: improvements in speech/audio codec based on linear prediction in spectral domain
Audio coding based on Frequency Domain Linear Prediction (FDLP) uses autoregressive models to approximate Hilbert envelopes in frequency sub-bands. Although the basic technique achieves good coding efficiency, there is a need to improve the reconstructed signal quality for tonal signals with impulsive spectral content. For such signals, the quantization noise in the FDLP codec appears as freque...
متن کاملAdaptive coding of hyperspectral imagery
Two systems are presented for compression of hyperspectral imagery. These systems utilize adaptive classification, trellis-coded quantization, and optimal rate allocation. In the first system, DPCM is used for spectral decorrelation, while an adaptive wavelet-based coding scheme is used for spatial decorrelation. The second system uses DPCM in conjunction with an adaptive DCT-based coding schem...
متن کاملDelta Modulation and Dpcm Coding of Color Signals
A simple yet efficient class of coding systems employed extensively in coding correlated sources is the DPCM and delta modulation systems. We will study the performance of the adaptive and the simple delta modulators at high sampling rates and will compare that to the performance of well designed DPCM systems. The results are obtained by simulating the coding systems on a digital computer and u...
